Article is an interview by the Authors of African feminist Fatou Sow of Senegal. Sow describes her life growing up and her experience in education and working with feminist groups in Senegal. Her life and work illustrates the inequality of the sexes in Senegalese society and the recurring struggles feminists face in the intellectual sphere.

“Peu après l’indépendance du Sénégal, Fatou Sow est l’une des premières africaines francophones à accéder à l’université. Elles étaient deux jeunes filles dans un amphi de 300 étudiants, raconte-t-elle. Assumer son statut de femme et d’intellectuelle n’a pas été sans embûches alors que l’accès des femmes à l’instruction était encore très rare et les préjugés machistes à leur égard bien ancrés. Elle a néanmoins mené à bien, et avec beaucoup de succès, après une thèse sur les élites sénégalaises, une carrière de chercheure en sociologie.” (Locoh and Puech, p. 1)
