Synopsis:

"Pacific Women Exploring Nonviolence begins with an explanation of the East Timorese struggle for independence and the current post-conflict situation. Under Indonesian military occupation almost a third of the population died. Some 85 [percent] of the country's infrastructure was destroyed when Indonesian forces withdrew after a referendum on autonomy. The killings left many women as widows. Women have since formed a variety of groups that struggle both for livelihood and for justice. The video portrays several such groups. The participants tell similar stories of sexual violence, of giving birth while running from soldiers, and of survival. The video's last section highlights Pacific women's actions for peace, and their ideas about justice and nonviolence."
