General Summary of Position:
The Consortium on Gender, Security and Human Rights, based at the University of Massachusetts Boston, is hiring a qualified Program Associate. The Program Associate will work closely with the Director to advance the Consortium’s research initiatives and activities that fall under the “Feminist Roadmap for Sustainable Peace and Planet” (FRSPP) project. Program Associate responsibilities include:
  • conducting extensive logistical planning and coordination, as well as background research, for FRSPP-affiliated workshops (at minimum, one on gender, climate change and peacebuilding and one on gender, extractive industries and peacebuilding are currently being planned for Fall 2021),
  • contributing to planning documents and outputs for the online workshops and webinars,
  • and developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with intersecting academic scholars, non-governmental and inter-governmental organizations, and activist networks.
The successful candidate will also provide direct development support to the Director in order to expand and manage grant funding for the FRSPP project. They will also coordinate communication and outreach for the FRSPP project and other Consortium events and publications, including producing written materials and managing the website and the Consortium’s social media accounts.
Examples of Responsibilities: 
FRSPP workshops
  • Creates and maintains calendar for all stages of workshop planning preparation and monitors deadline adherence;
  • Manages and tracks participant communications and coordinates pre-workshop collaborative writing and discussions;
  • Manages logistics, including coordinating flight purchases with the University of Massachusetts Boston-approved travel agency and the procurement processes for venues and workshop materials;
  • Tracks workshop budget and expenditures;
  • Contributes research on topics relevant to the workshop for the purpose of conceptualization of the agenda;
  • Under the guidance of the Director, develops plan for dissemination of workshop outputs, including the translation of workshop outputs into training materials and toolkits.
  • Assists Director in preparing documents for board meetings and other convenings;
  • Liaises with relevant offices at the University of Massachusetts Boston to execute grant management, budgeting, including reallocation and reconciliation, and reporting; 
  • Prepares written materials on a timely basis, including, but not limited to, draft correspondence, meeting minutes, talking points, strategy updates, and reports;
  • In partnership with or under the guidance of Director, works with internal and external partners in planning and implementing events and initiatives, including:
    • 2-4 online or in-person events on FRSPP-related topics (examples: gender, peacebuilding and (1) climate crisis, (2) extractive industries, (3) infrastructure, (4) international financial mechanisms, (5) green growth) per semester;
    • An FRSPP project dissemination workshop at the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations in 2022;
  • Tracks, implements and updates project and communications goals and strategies, including producing internal and external communication, in coordination with the Director and Senior Researcher;
  • Drafts and edits written materials for the CGSHR website and social media accounts as they pertain to CGSHR events and publications;
  • Hires, trains and supervises a small cohort of Consortium interns, and develops and implements internship programming;
  • Serves as liaison to the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security;
  • And performs other duties and manages ad hoc projects as assigned.
Preparation, Knowledge, Previous Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably in International Relations, Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, or a related field;
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of professional work experience preferred.
Skills, Abilities, Competencies:
  • Familiarity with the academic fields of gender and security studies, feminist security studies, feminist political economy, and/or intersectional environmentalism preferred;
  • Project management experience and ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects;
  • A highly organized, detail-oriented and analytical creative thinker with proven strong problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and ability to proactively communicate with others when barriers to meeting deadlines arise;
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Intern management experience and ability to motivate and manage others; 
  • Able and excited to give and receive feedback in a positive manner;
  • Resourceful and able to work independently;
  • Familiarity with the theories and practices of racial equity and intersectionality, and how they relate to the academic and nonprofit ecosystem;
  • Ability to interact well with a diverse range of people, ideas, and opinions; and
  • High level proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Excel and Power Point required.
Time frame: This is a grant funded position, currently guaranteed through December 31, 2021. However, there is a strong likelihood of renewal for 2022.
Salary range: $42,000.00 – $46,000.00 USD, depending on experience.
Start date: This full-time position will begin on Monday, May 17, 2021. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
